Project Bonneville

This project is developing in stages as usual when you start a carbuild from scratch. The first stage is collecting parts and start the fabrication. The goal is a '33-'34 Ford Coupe inspired by the form-follows-function cars in land speed racing at Bonneville Salt Flats, especially in the early years. The engine/motor/drivetrain is not decided at this point and the chassies may serve as a testbed for different alternatives.

The Frame
The starting point was a 150x100x4 mm tube, 4 meters long.
The tube cut into two 150x50x4 rails.
Straightning the rails: The left has been pressed into shape, the right still has a bow on the long side.
Four patterns were made, two from the frame side view and two from the top view.
The rail was cut for the bends.
The pattern was tacked under the rail and the rail bent to follow the pattern.
The rear rail bends fully welded.
The right rail needs a bit straightening after welding.
Working on the box plates, welded in six M12 nuts for a bolt on X-member.
Weld preparation for the boxing plates.
Finished welding, it took three passes with the TIG to build up enough material.
The rear part is finished Bonneville style, now onto the next bend.
The sides are bent to follow the pattern and new edges tacked in.
Cleaning the Chrysler 354 Hemi block (see top of page for complete engine) with the frame rails in the background.
